We only usually cover internet videos when they are relative to marketing and used to catapult a project, idea or business.

But I couldn’t pass the opportunity to share this. Zach Galifianakis lights up a joint during a conversation about the legalization of marajuana on Bill Maher Show. This could potentially fall under our viral video category for the sole fact that this appearance, while plugging Zach’s new movie “Due Date” is amazing timing.

To confirm it was real conservative Republican Margaret Hoover smells it. Priceless!

Bands are a dime a dozen these days. Today’s technology makes it easier then ever to record a song, shoot and edit a music video, and publish it to the web. So what’s gonna make you / your band stand out from the rest… a CREATIVE idea!

Take for instance, Atomic Tom’s brilliant Guerilla Marketing video. These guys shot a music video on NYC train using their iPhones as both video cameras and ALL OF THEIR INSTRUMENTS! The concept behind this video is genius on soo many levels.

The video starts off saying that all the band’s instruments were recently stolen. If that’s true.. way to improvise. Creativity often comes from restraint. I had never seen instrument apps being put to practical use. Impromptu performances on a NYC train are nothing new. An impromptu performance using your iphone as a microphone, piano, guitar, bass, drum kit, and video camera, definitely is! Is this the end of physical instruments? Did the iPhone kill the instrument like video killed the radio star?? Regardless, this is an awesome example of how technology is changing every aspect of our lives. And not for nothing, Apple should be using this video as their new commercial and paying the band for it!

Atomic Tom and Universal Records could have spent a small fortune buying print ads in magazines, airtime on radio stations, or tv commercials. Instead they embraced the new face of marketing and went viral. Prior to the ” Take Me Out, ” release, the majority of their YouTube videos didn’t have many plays at all. This video currently stands at 1.3 million views!!! They gained 210,000 plays over the course of me writing this… you can’t pay for that type of publicity! For example, until this morning I had never of these guys and now I’m blogging about them and have sent the video link to at least 20 friends. Who I’m sure sent it to at least 10 of their friends, posted on their Facebook wall, tweeted about, so on and so on. You need to allow your fans, clients, whoever, to take your photos, songs, videos, etc… and repost them at will! Restricting your content to just your website or YouTube channel only hurts you. You should make it as easy as possible for your audience to redistribute your content for free and not only will they be back with credit cards in hand, so will their friends. Case in point: I saw Atomic Tom’s video on my friend’s Facebook wall this morning, googled the band, landed on their MySpace, listened to some more of their music, and finally clicked a link to buy the album from iTunes.

Whatever your industry, you need to set yourself apart from the crowd and cultivate an audience. And you don’t need to spend a fortune to do so. All you have to do, is put your thinking cap on and eat a huge bowl of creativity for breakfast!

I ran across this online and was extremely confused.
This is a viral video created for Google Mobile. It is literally 10 min of a guy using search with my voice software saying “pizza” over and over. But never finds it.
The video is significatly long for a google promotion and makes no sense. I am assuming this is a shot at create a something to go viral and if it works well congrats to Google. Will it work? Is this video stupid? Any insight because I am still confused.

This past Monday one of my favorite bands, Thriving Ivory, released their latest single, “Where We Belong,” via Tweet. It’s one of those feel good make ya happy songs… actually all their music makes me happy! I’m a sucker for strings and piano, what can I say?! And I especially love the line, ” Somewhere down the line, I lost that part of me that’s pure.” At least that’s what I think he says! These guys are currently recording their sophomore album, still yet to be titled, in NYC. They don’t have a release date for the new album yet either. So for now, head over to their website and listen to the their new song!

I’ve been listening to this band for awhile now, since their first self-released EP… and unfortunately have yet to see them live!!! I first fell in love with their single, “Hey Lady,” it was basically my anthem for the past 7 or so years. Check out the video for “Hey Lady,” below!

Well, now it is annual, because it happened last year at this same time. Some of your favorite video content on the web are nominated, including makemealive’s favorite Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis. Last year, over 40,000 people tuned in to watch the first Streamy Award live @ http://watch.streamys.org/go/. I bet it doubles this year.

The Streamy Awards is an award show created for online web series and viral videos. The growth of the web has allowed a new era of web video content. Television is in a funky place, currently as web is beginning to be the new media medium. Monitor manufacturers are releasing web applications in there interfaces. Many people believe, before we know it, cable will be obsolete and web will be the way we watch content.

The concept is overwhelming to imagine. The floodgates have been opened and anyone from there own living room can become the next teen heart throb or popular series in you and your families lives. It’s a wild thought. Imagine when sony and samsung begin selling you a subscription to pick a number of webisodes you want to subscribe to. Why pay for content you don’t care to see??

Anyways, this got way to deep. The Streamy Awards will be streaming live April 11th. Go to the site to vote for your favorite nominees. streamy.org

I want to know where you think the future of video media is going. What do you think will happen to television networks and how the playing field will change??? Get at me!

This is a no-brainer, but so many people, especially in the entertainment business and wonder why they are still doing the same ‘ol thing.

Without products, you cannot make money. These can be in the form of services, physical, digital, affiliate or whatever else you can think of. The format doesn’t matter as long as they add value to your career and your business.

I talk to so many musicians locally here in Orlando and all over the world through my sites and products and the number one thing stopping their growth is that they have “0″ income potential.

If you aren’t playing shows, don’t have an album/movie/art, and aren’t looking at ways to monetize your talent, it becomes really tough to get that MTV crib.

The next variable is adding value through your products. Having a CD is like having a business card. Yea, bands get away with selling them at live shows, but the value in the plastic revolution is far passed. Fans are looking for something beyond what they can find for free with a Google or Torrent search.
I recently came across this promotion for 72 Musicians, a film about 20 bands who told their story about bring on the road and being musicians. Here is the trailer:

Now they are looking to make some money off this thing (how ironic that you would want to get paid for your hard work!)

The cool thing is that they are not trying to get into your Blockbuster or Netflix as the number one way of generating some revenue. Instead they are giving direct access to fans with a ton of options:

They have price points and mediums that reach every fan. From a $7.99 download all the way to a $400 Hard Drive of the raw files.

They even have a free download of the soundtrack in exchange for the coveted email address.

Looking at musicians and other artists, are there ways that you can adapt this model to work for you? How can you use your podium, microphone or other platform to turn what you love and work your ass of for into something that pays the bills and gives value to others?

This post was written by Greg Rollett, music marketing guy and advocate of taking musicians’s money to help them make more money.

We recently wrote an article on funnyordie.com, the social comedy website created by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. Since then, I personally have become obsessed with the site. Especially one part in particular… “Between Two Ferns.” This is where Zack Galifianakis awkwardly and offensively interviews celebrities… and it’s absolutely hysterical!! Check out the latest interview with Ben Stiller!!!
